Gastric banding:

Gastric band is an adjustable band which is made up of silicone attached to a inflatable balloon. It is fitted to the upper part of the stomach by laparoscopic surgery. There are two types of bariatric surgery.

  1. Restricting the size of the stomach so that the capacity of the stomach would just hold 1 cup of food.
  2. Decrease in the absorption of calories in the small intestine.

Duodenal switch surgery:

Duodenal switch surgery  also known as biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch or “DS” shrinks the stomach size by 80%, reroutes the intestines, and removes the gallbladder, which in turn makes the patient feel less hungry and helps to secrete fewer hunger causing hormones. It is the most complicated procedure but the best procedure for weight loss and improvement of health.

Roux-en-Y gastric bypass:

The roux-en-Y gastric bypass is performed by introducing a laparoscope, which is connected to a video camera, through small abdominal incisions and gives a magnified view of the internal organs on a television monitor. A small pouch is created with a stapling instrument. The excluded stomach is not removed; it continues to produce digestive juices and some essential factors. It gives the patient a fuller feeling and this in turn absorbs fewer calories.

Sleeve gastrectomy:

Sleeve gastrectomy is performed by making some incisions in the abdomen by placing a video camera through laproscopic method. About 75% of the stomach is removed leaving a narrow gastric sleeve and hence known as sleeve gastrectomy. Sleeve gastrectomy causes decrease in appetite and reduces the amount of “hunger hormone and causes to lose weight. Patients who have a very high body mass index (BMI) or who are at risk for undergoing anesthesia or any heart or lung disorders may be benefited by sleeve gastrectomy.
